The jabot and cuffs were generally attached to the white dress shirt that was worn by men. The Jabot was tied around the neck or a ruffly part that was part of the shirt.
The frilly ruffle that came to make the jabot and cuffs were made of a lace made of mostly white fabric. The lace endings were sewn together to make a decorative design to make it look frilly for both the jabot and cuffs. The jabot came from the ruffly part that was at the top end of a man’s white shirt, and eventually became it’s own piece of neck-wear that it made to be tied around his neck. The cuffs that have these ruffled ends are the cuffs themselves, made at the very end of the sleeves.
The jabot came to be around 1650. Two years before that time, Grinling Gibbons was born. Around his adulthood, he developed a sculpture of the combination of the bow tie and the jabot.

Both the jabot and cuffs both began to decline around the 19th century and yet the jabot seemed to be mostly worn only by judges of a high court (mostly supreme court justices) especially by the French and women, even if they aren’t mandatory.
The jabot and cuffs are laced and frilly/ruffled as said to be by the general public, used as costume parts for moving media forms that are set in stories set in the 17th and 18th centuries, the Baroque period of music, the times of composers like Bach and Mozart. The jabot and cuffs also appears to be quite popular amongst the Gothic community, signifying their liking of Gothic literature from authors like Edgar Allan Poe.
In popular culture, the jabot and cuffs have been part of the famous blue costume that was worn by Mike Myers for the live action comedy film character Austin Powers. “Yeah, baby! Yeah!”
