Swan Lake

I sit

breathless

in the dark

as the dancer

playing the swan

rotates limply

in her lover's arms

the sad sweet music

stroked from

a violin

pulling my nerves

taught as it's strings

Lighting

blue and dim

does not hide

the dancer's age

or the awkward bones

of too thin arms

but she is beautiful

turning on her

blistered toes

with scuffed satin shoes

as the music

drags

the soul out of my body

in heated tears

She is not merely

the sum of her parts

but

statue-like

she signifies

without being

an ideal

with movements as proscribed

as those of a priest

she sketches

the faintest outline

of love
