I'm wanting to teach a little girl's soccer team how to tie dye their uniform socks

Please Help! My friend and I coach 8 & 9 year olds in soccer and there are really great tie dye socks available in blue. Unfortunately our team is maroon. How do you tie dye?

Starting with white socks (cotton or nylon, not polyester. Nylon works best.), tie rubber bands around parts of the socks very tightly in concentric circles. Put the socks into a pot of maroon dye mixed in water. The pot should be hot, boiling is best. It also helps if you are using RIT dye that you put in extra salt, about 1/2 cup salt for every package of dye. Boil the socks for a bit, then take them out with tongs, and rinse them with cold water before taking off the rubber bands. If you want to add some zip to your socks, then add this extra step, before you take off all the bands: loosen or even remove a couple of rubber bands on each sock, and then repeat the boiling, etc in a pot of RIT Fuchsia colored dye. This will make little bits of bright pink in the maroon. Finally rinse the whole thing with the bands in. then take the bands out and hang up the socks to dry. -- ---Tara

Thanks! They came out great and the kids loved them.
